How to Choose an NVMe SSD for Gaming
- Interface generation: Gen 4 drives hit up to ~7,400MB/s; Gen 5 pushes far higher — match to your motherboard or console.
- Capacity: 1TB is a solid baseline; larger drives store more of today’s big-install games.
- PS5 compatibility: For console storage expansion, confirm PS5 support and consider a heatsink model.
- Heatsink: High-speed drives run hot; a heatsink or graphite sheet helps maintain performance.
- Endurance and NAND: Quality TLC 3D NAND balances speed, longevity, and value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an NVMe SSD improve gaming?
Yes — NVMe drives dramatically cut load times and speed up asset streaming compared to SATA SSDs or hard drives, making games launch faster and feel more responsive overall.
Do I need Gen 5 or is Gen 4 enough?
Gen 4 drives like the 990 PRO are more than fast enough for gaming today. Gen 5 drives like the 9100 PRO offer future headroom and benefit heavy professional workloads, but require a compatible Gen 5 slot.
Which NVMe works with a PS5?
The PS5 needs a Gen 4 drive meeting its speed and size specs, ideally with a heatsink. The Samsung 990 PRO is a popular, verified choice for expanding PS5 storage.
How much capacity do I need?
1TB is a comfortable starting point given today’s large game installs, but 2TB or 4TB gives more room if you keep a big library. Faster, larger drives cost more, so balance capacity with budget.
Final Thoughts
A great NVMe SSD makes gaming feel faster from the moment you boot. The Samsung 990 PRO leads for reliable Gen 4 speed and PS5 use, the 9100 PRO is the Gen 5 flagship, and the WD_Black SN7100 and Crucial P310 offer strong value. Match the generation and capacity to your system, and enjoy near-instant loads.
